There are many cities that people would love to live in across the nation. However, the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA are the ones that people either move away from or avoid at all cost. Each location on this list was placed based on the number of violent crimes per 100,000 people, including the number of robberies and rape cases that occur on average. In some instances, the numbers of each type of violent crime being committed per capita is higher overall than the other cities listed.
#10 Cleveland, OHIO (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,383.8)
While the city itself is beautiful to look at, Cleveland has the second highest robbery and burglary rate nationwide. Last year’s totals were 3,252 and 2,500 respectively. Add in the fact that over a third of the city’s population lives below the poverty line and what it shows is a place filled with desperation and a dash of danger. That being said, Cleveland’s earned its spot on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list.
#9 Baltimore, Maryland (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,405.7)
Just a figurative stone’s throw away from the nation’s capital, Baltimore is a very rough place to live. With more than 200 murders per capita and double that for robberies, people may want to think twice about carrying a lot of things when visiting the city. This place on the top 10 most dangerous cities in USA list may appear to be friendly on the surface, but it’s not the kind of place that will make you feel at ease.
#8 New Haven, Connecticut (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,439.2)
New Haven is a gorgeous city with a mixed bag of crime being committed within the city limits. While robberies and assaults rose are on the rise, the murder rate has dropped by 50% of the course of a single year. There are some other problems the police and community are trying to fight, including gun violence, but they seem to be heading in a good direction. If that were not the case, then New Haven would be up higher on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA.
#7 Birmingham, Alabama (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,517.8)
No matter when people were born in the city, Birmingham has always been a rough place to live. Last year, they had one of the 10 highest murder and assault rates in thecountry with 31.4 and 954 per capita respectively. Birmingham not only earned its place on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list, but it also has the fifth highest of property crimes nationwide (6,934.1 per capita).
#6 Stockton, California (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,548)
Stockton is a city that has fallen from grace: it is the largest U.S. city that has filed for bankruptcy and has been experiencing a steady rise in violent crime in the process. The most of them being murders, assaults, and robberies. Add on an unemployment rate of 18% and things begin to look grim for the people that live there. The weather may be nice out west, but this place on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list is rougher than most around the edges.
#5 Memphis, Tennessee (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,750)
With the third highest assault rate in the nation last year, Memphis has rightfully earned a spot of the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list. Last year, over 1,100 cases per capita were reported, along with a high number of robberies to boot. Things have gotten so bad that almost half of Memphis’ population doesn’t feel safe within its limits at night, according to a recent Gallup survey. That put it to the number one spot for them, but it was not enough to unseat the rest on this list.
#4 St. Louis, Missouri (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,776.5)
High amounts of assault and murder put St. Louis in the position it’s in. However, that may not be the case when the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list is updated next year. Law enforcement officers have been increasing their presence in high-crime area around the city. Their efforts seem to be working in the city’s favor, but they have got a long way to go, if they want to be on the “Most Peaceful” list next year.
#3 – Oakland, California (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 1,993.1)
Oakland is on a lot of negative lists for good reason: they have number of robberies per capita nationwide and are experiencing a rise in assaults and murders at the same time. They also had to make huge cuts to their budget, which caused many officers to be laid off and the crime to rise. The city would be higher up on the top 10 most dangerous cities in USA, but no one really wants to be at the top to begin with.
#2 – Detroit, Michigan (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 2,122.6)
Detroit has had rough time and having the second highest amount of murders per capita nationwide isn’t helping make things better. Things have not been this bad for the silver medal winner on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list, since the 1970s. That being said, they are not the most dangerous city and are still able to make a comeback.
#1 Flint, Michigan (Violent Crimes Per Capita: 2,729.5)
When it comes to violent crime, the folks that live in Flint figuratively see it every time they walk out the door. Compared to the other places on the Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA list, this city has the most depressing future out of the bunch. The state does not have the cash to make the city’s streets as safe as they use to be before the economy collapsed years ago. We hope that if you live in any of these Top 10 Most Dangerous Cities in USA that no violent crime has been committed against you or your loved ones. It is our recommendation that you not move to any of these cities, if you do not live there right at present. Why not choose one of the safer cities to make your home?
